State Teams (Men's)
1970-1974
The new decade opened with the State men’s team continuing to explore Asia, competing in tournaments in Indonesia and Malaysia against the national teams of Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore amongst others.
On the home front the State team welcomed an increasing number of European sides to Perth, including Moscow Dynamo, Manchester City, FC Zurich, Aberdeen and Chelsea as well as an England FA representative side and New Zealand national team.

1970 Jakarta Anniversary Cup
The Soccer Federation of Western Australia expanded their horizons by accepting an invitation to play in the inaugural Jakarta Anniversary Cup, a six-team tournament commemorating the establishment of Indonesian Government.
Unfortunately, coach Doug Stewart was prevented from taking his strongest squad to Indonesia with several players forced to chose between the trip to Jakarta and the prestigious Merdeka Tournament, which was held five weeks later, due to work commitments.
Dubbed an ‘Australian XI’ by organisers, the State team held their own against the national teams of Indonesia and Hong Kong only to go down to both. Their only success arrived in a pre-tournament friendly with East Java side Bogor State.

1970 Merdeka Tournament
A disappointing tenth place was all West Australia could muster from their fourth successive appearance at Malaysia’s Merdeka Tournament. The writing was on the wall when, just weeks out from departure, State coach Doug Stewart confirmed he unable to make the trip and Graham Oughton adopted the dual role of captain-coach.
The State side – the only non-national team in the tournament – won only twice in the preliminary rounds to finish fifth in the six-team Group A. That set-up a play-off for ninth with Thailand who, in monsoon conditions, adapted better to a flooded pitch to score a plucky 2-0 victory.
“Our team more than held their own in most game and though we won only two matches we could quite easily have been more successful with just an ounce of luck,” State team manager Barry Greenwood on his return to Perth. “WAs soccer reputation still stands high in Asia.” Nonetheless, West Australia would be invited back to Malaysia in 1971.

1971 Jakarta Anniversary Cup
West Australian maintained their presence in Asia by participating in the Jakarta Anniversary Cup. However, the tour almost fell at the first hurdle with the Indonesia Football Association refusing to invite West Australia on account of the previous years’ poor performance.
Julius Re, president of the Soccer Federation of West Australia, flew to Jakarta to negotiate a compromise. Consequently, three former eastern states players now residing in Perth – Jim Sambrook, Keith Gibson and John Lovell – were included in John Adshead’s 17-player squad.
Unfortunately, the combined ‘Australia XI’ were slow to ignite, scraping out a draw with Cambodia and losing to Malaysia before defeating South Korea in the play-off for fifth. It would be four years before West Australia was next invited to compete in Asia.
