State Teams (Men's)
1960-1967
Interstate fixtures were the only outlet for the State men’s team between April 1960 and July 1963 due to a FIFA-imposed suspension on international football in Australia.
The lifting of that ban brought Everton, Chelsea, AS Roma and a star-studded Manchester United to Perth, the latter attracting the largest crowd seen in West Australia to date.
1967 is synonymous in the annals of West Australian football with the senior State team embarking on their first foray abroad for the Merdeka Tournament in Malaysia.

1963 National Championship
Tommy Clayton was handed the coaching reigns for a marathon National Championship, which commenced in April 1963. When the series wrapped up 18 months later Clayton had been replaced by Peter Norris who had been replaced by Eddie McGeough.
West Australia opened with a comfortable win over Northern New South Wales, John McInroy helping himself to a hat-trick. Two months later Victoria inflicted a seven-goal hiding and before the week was out the State team had gone down by the odd goal in three to South Australia.
Bev Allan spearheaded the State team to victory over Tasmania by piling on four goals. New South Wales scored late twice to steal victory before West Australia’s campaign came to an end with honours shared with Queensland.

1967 Merdeka Tournament
West Australia took their first steps into Asia by participating in 11th Merdeka Tournament. The visit to Malaysia was made possible by the dogged determination of Julius Re, president of the Soccer Federation of West Australia, who actively lobbied the Australian Soccer Federation to endorse the State team’s entry.
Getting the travelling party of 27 to and home from ‘Pestabola Merdeka’ proved expensive. “A total of $8,000 was needed,” explained Re. “Though many promises to support the fund were given, only $1,200 was forthcoming from sources outside the soccer. The rest of the money came from the Federation.”
“With two wins – against Thailand and Singapore – from six matches, WA finished ninth in the 11-team tournament, a commendable effort in our first Merdeka venture. We can look forward confidently to better results in 1968.” added Re.
