Morgan Aquino’s superb season between the posts for Perth Glory has been rewarded with the A-League Women’s Goalkeeper of the Season award. The 22-year old was named the competitions top shot-stopper only days after being named in Professional Footballers Australia 2023/24 A-League Women’s Team of the Season.
Morgan’s position as Glory’s first choice ‘keeper appeared to be under threat following the off-season arrival of Young Matildas custodian Sally James. However, Morgan played all 22 games, was a big part of her teams’ strong early season form and then almost single-handedly kept them in the finals hunt late when the team tailed off.
Morgan led the league with 126 saves – 35 more than second-placed Izzy Nino – and recorded a save percentage of 81.1% while also saving two of the three penalties she faced. She is the second West Australian to be named women’s national league Goalkeeper of the Year after Katanning-born Lydia Williams, who has won the award five times.
Morgan played locally with Northern Redbacks prior to signing with Glory in 2016. Australia youth representative honours followed, however, her national league debut did not arrive until January 2020 with an appearance off the bench against Western Sydney Wanderers.
The following summer was spent with Brisbane Roar after which she returned to her hometown club, where the gloves were shared with Courtney Newbon and Sarah Langman. This season Morgan made the position her own and was one of the first names on coach Alex Epakis’ teamsheet.
