Socceroo Cameron Burgess is set to become the eighth West Australian to reach the dizzy heights of the English Premier League. Cameron’s club, Ipswich Town, completed a remarkable return to the world’s biggest football league by securing their second successive promotion on the weekend.

After finishing as League One runners-up in 2022/23, Ipswich claimed back-to-back promotions by placing second in the Championship. Ipswich secured their place in next seasons’ Premier League with a a final day 2-0 win over Huddersfield United which triggered a pitch invasion.

It came just days after Cameron bundled the ball in at close-range to earn Ipswich a 2-1 win over Coventry City, a result which put them on the verge of promotion. The former ECU Joondalup junior featured in 39 of his teams 46 league games this season as the Tractor Boys ended a 22-year absence from England’s top flight.

Should Cameron, who comes out of contract in August, remain with Ipswich for the 2024/25 campaign he will follow in the footsteps of goalkeeper Andy Petterson, Stan Lazaridis, Chris Coyne, Richard Garcia, Brad Jones, Chris Herd and Jordan Lyden as West Australians to have played in the English Premier League.

Aberdeen-born Cameron started out locally with Joondalup before linking with Fulham, where he made his professional debut in August 2014. He has since chalked up close to 350 senior outings through spells with Cheltenham Town, Oldham Athletic, Bury, Scunthorpe United, Salford City, Accrington Stanley and Ipswich, who he joined in mid-2021.

The towering centre back gained his 100th Ipswich appearance in April’s derby loss to Norwich City. Cameron represented both Australia and Scotland at youth levels but had to wait until he was 28 before making his senior debut in the Socceroos draw with Mexico in September 2023. He currently has seven caps to his name.
