Night Series

A commanding performance by Floreat Athena earned them a 4-0 win over Perth SC in the Night Series decider at Frank Drago Reserve. “The boys were very disciplined, organised as a unit and played some nice football,” said Floreat coach Vas Vujacic. “We controlled the game from start to finish and the 4-0 was reward for that.”

Peter Petkov opened Floreat’s account after only 14 minutes by heading in Riley Woodcock’s cross from the left. Phil Arnold widened the gap with a rasping low drive from the edge of the 18-yard box after a poor clearance landed at his feet.

Perth fashioned some good opportunties early in the second half only to have Petkov stride forward and finish low past Luke Radonich. A miserable night for Perth was assured when Hasani Sinclair’s spot kick was kept out by Jason Saldaris. Victory was sealed by substitute Bayley Brown-Montgomery’s close-range finish.

Belt-Up Cup

Cockburn City ended a 27-year wait for State Cup glory by defeating Armadale 3-2 in a pulsating finale to the knock-out competition. Daniel Robinson gave the Cockerels a dream start by converting a penalty awarded after Harry O’Brien was up-ended by Connor Thurston.

It looked as though Cockburn were home and hosed when O’Brien doubled their tally early in the second half. But Armadale had other ideas and goals in quick succession from Pieter Jacobsz and Angel Andres Rivera put proceedings on a knife’s edge.

The game was in stoppage time when Jeff Bright was clipped by Armadale goalkeeper Yousri Gharsallah, who was red carded for his mis-demeanour. Robinson stepped up to convert past substitute Alex Fisher to secure Cockburn victory.

Top Four Cup

Daryl Nicol scored a dramatic late winner as Perth RedStar came from behind to claim a 3-2 victory over Floreat Athena in the Grand Final of the Top Four Cup. A tight first half was punctuated when Bayley Brown-Montgomery combined with Phil Arnold before rifling in from distance.

With this the momentum swung in Floreat’s favour and, after going close several times, Petkov and Andrew Palmer teamed up to find Arnold whose long-range shot found the bottom corner. The second half followed much the same pattern as Floreat sought a third goal.

But the game was turned on its head in a pulsating final 20 minutes. Ryan Lowry headed in an Andy Higgins free-kick then Nick Walsh’s cross was converted by Nicol to level proceedings. The decider arrived in stoppage time with Nicol firing in at the back post after Higgins nodded down a cross by Kye Murray.
